Trump - July 2024 - "I know nothing about Project 2025."
Trump - October 2025- Meeting with Russ Vought "he of Project 2025 Fame," to decide which Federal agencies to cut.
Russell Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget
Official biography here. Wikipedia entry here. Profile on Democracy Docket here. He is a self-described Christian nationalist.
Project 2025 is the playbook being used by the 47 Administration to rapidly downsize and disable the Federal Government and exert right-wing control over Congress, the Courts, and the entire Executive Branch. Does that sound extreme? It is.
Project 2025 began as an initiative launched in 2022 by The Heritage Foundation, a leading conservative think tank.
In 2023, the Foundation published the 2025 Presidential Transition Project (i.e., "Project 2025"), a lengthy document detailing plans to appoint ideologically aligned civil servants, restrict abortion access, oppose LGBTQ+ rights, transform federal agencies for political purposes, and impose strict immigration policies.
In June 2024, candidate Trump claimed to know nothing of Project 2025, despite the fact that Russell Vought (see column), one of the major authors of the document, had been deputy director then director of the Office of Management and Budget in his first administration. The the surprise of no one, in February 2025, Russell Vought was confirmed as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget.
Vought is the strategist behind the radical expansion of presidential power, the rapid deployment of the military to suppress civil dissent, and the use of the Justice Department to exact retribution on political opposition.
This is not just the usual Republican politics, or even a traditional Conservative effort: The ultimate goal behind these initiatives is nothing less than the installation of a Christian Nationalist government in the U.S.
